ME CLEVELAND, YOU JANE

I'm being interviewed for Cleveland Magazine tonight at the 1300 Gallery as a preview story on Nervous Bird. Should be pretty cool. I believe it will run in their February 2006 issue. ROCK!

Also, Jane Magazine (one of my friggin' FAVORITES) has requested high res images of my work for publication. I have no idea if a blurb is in the works but I'm still completely excited about it.

You betcha!

COALITION OF THE THRILLING

Last night I knocked out some friggin' killer drawing/collages if I do say so myself. The drawings are done with motor oil, ink, graphite and some crazy gold tissue paper. Say it with me "F-YEAH!"

The Las Vegas Countdown has officially begun. 18 days and counting, people. 18 days to "Big Plastic America"

So, where's Osama?! Have the American people figured out yet that Saddam Hussein had NO link to the September 11th attacks? Also, how can we build democracy in Iraq when we can't even build a levy that won't break?

These are questions that keep me up at night. I blame the grocery bags of fatigue under my eyes on the current Administration. Dammit! I'm NEVER going to look like those plastic 20 years olds that the entertainment industry shoves down our throats. I guess I'll have to resort to brain power. Now if only I could get rid of my headache....

GOOD FREAKIN' MORNING!

It took me several days to wake from my potato coma, but I made it and I'm okay.

Tomorrow I'm being interviewed for a preview piece on Nervous Bird and I have to admit that I'm just a little bit nervous about it. When you're in the middle of creating a body of work it gets a tad difficult to articulate exactly what's going on in your head. Not that I don't know what's going on in my head, I have a pretty good grasp on the reasons for the work. The tricky thing is how to describe work in progress, so that it makes sense to the writer. I'm speaking specifically about the installation piece.

In other news: I've been hashing out the next two bodies of work. One is kind of gnarly and the other is just plain awesome and fun. hee!

UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS

Look for posts in January for group exhibitions I'm in at the Bela Dubby Gallery as well as the Pop Shop Gallery here in The Land of Cleves. I've got drawings in both places.

I'm submitting three pieces to a gallery in Washington DC for a group exhibition there. Notification will happen in February.

Other than that, I've got nothing going on. However, I'd like to repost a painting from a while back titled Gossip from my Reflections & Complaints exhibition. It seems that people are being directed to my blog through this painting often and I want to direct folks to this site. Anyway, the images I post are copyrighted. But if there's any dispute, I have the originals. Thanks.

ENTER THE DRAGGIN'

Haven't posted for a couple of days because 1. I've been busy at my day job, 2. I don't use the computer at home and 3. I've been really sick.

Anyway, it's snowing outside and there's nothing I can do about it except try to melt it with my laser vision, which seems to be on the fritz.

We've got friends coming in from out of town tomorrow and Thanksgiving at my parents' house on Thursday (of course). I'll be creating the 20lb mountain of mashed potatoes again this year. It seems that the masher has been handed down to me from my Aunt Lee. The dish will forever be known as Aunt Lee's Mashed Potatoes just as we have Aunt Alice's Cake Frosting (which is the BOMB, people!)

I wish we could leave early today or not have to come in tomorrow. OH well...

KING KONG PLAYS PING PONG IN HONG KONG WITH HIS DING DONG

Yes, I'm VERY enthused about the new King Kong film. I just read Entertainment Weekly's story on it last night. The link provided for the film is one that chronicles the making of the remake. Do you follow?

The minute I saw the trailer, I knew I would have to see it! I mean, the battle between the T-Rex and Kong...c'MON! It's a classic.

THE PRESSURE IS GETTING TO ME

This change in pressure has succeeded in giving me a whomping, painful sinus headache today. Hard to concentrate on the tasks at hand and I have a newly found hatred for flourescent lighting.

On the upside, the day is 1/2 over. meh.

HORRIBLEFEST is NOT PUNK ROCK!

You have to be a complete and utter fucking idiot to steal from a club to "even" the score. Asshats. I will NOT support HorribleFest next year if this is the kind of shit that is pulled.

Tony Erba posted this on his Myspace page. I'm reposting it here on my blog. Feel free to grab and repost it yourself.

PLEASE REPOST THIS! :

Attention Horrible Fest bands: equip. stolen from Beachland

To all the bands that played Horrible Fest--if you didnt get paid or got far below your gurantee and decided to settle the score by copping gear form the club, please realize that your theft of $2000 of mikes and quad boxes from the Beachland in no way makes you 'even'...the club didn't book or promote the show.

They gave the promoters a great deal on the room, and lost their ass paying for security as well. Take it up with the promoters all you want (I would) but just return the gear.

Mark Leddy just wants the mikes back, no questions asked. They can't even hold a show in the Ballroom until they have mikes.

This is no big corporate club...I've promoted shows there and gotten the room for FREE half the time. Best place we've had here in years. Great people who give a shit about our music and culture.

anyone with any info is urged to call Mark at 216.383-1124. There will be no consequences taken or questions asked. You can even contact me if you'd rather have the shit mysteriously show up and want it to happen through an intermediary. My email is clevoripper@yahoo.com Do the right thing and return the gear, then take your issues up with the organizers.-tony erba

I LIKE BIG BOOKS AND I CANNOT LIE

I just finished reading David Sedaris' Dress Your Family in Courdoroy and Denim, which was so funny I laughed out loud IN PUBLIC while reading it. I've only had this happen once before while reading Umberto Eco's How to Travel With a Salmon. Umberto Eco, as you all know, is my favorite author of all time. I have almost every single one of his books including the non-fiction.

While in Chicago my sister passed along to me James Frey's A Million Little Pieces. At the moment I'm on page 333 and I'm completely sucked in. Frey is a native Clevelander who chronicled his 6 weeks in rehab and the result is this book. It is making me rethink a few things while confirming others.

My boyfriend got a great book for me by Mark Obmascik that I'm in the middle of called The Big Year, which is about following birders (not birdwatchers as that is a term to describe hobbyists as I learned) in their quest to record as many birds as possible in one year. Obmascik chronicles 1998's North American Big Year. Andrew Howe chronicles his 1997 California Big Year with his bird list here.

The whole shebang is extremely interesting and quite timely as I approach my Nervous Bird exhibition.

WITH A PURPOSEFUL GRIMACE AND A TERRIBLE SOUND

An ancient "Godzilla" like creature is foooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuund!

CLEVELAND v. CHICAGO

There are a few things going on in Cleveland this weekend that I won't be able to attend because I'll be in Chicago. I'd like to take a moment with you now to ease you into what could turn out to be a really great time in our fair city.

C'mere and sit down next to me. Have some tea.

Okay:

HorribleFest kicked off yesterday at the Beachland Tavern. Here is the myspace page with a schedule & venues. The Jeffrey Novak One Man Band was righteous as were the Trailer Park Tornadoes and The Butchers (I bought a pin). Here is the website.

Also going on in a neighborhood near you is the Tremont Art Walk, which happens every second Friday of the month. Of particular interest are:

ASTERISK GALLERY*
2393 Professor Ave.
Wild Plum: Exile on Professor Street group show. Featuring
Damon Reaves, Colin Toke, Brian D. Kelly, John Ryan
Anna Giangrande, Shahin Afnan and Renee Rothhaas.

There will be poetry readings at the Brandt Gallery, which always has something kickass going on.

If you're not in the mood to be on the west side, then you should check out:

B.K. Smith Gallery
391 W. Washington St.(Lake Erie College)
Painesville, OH 44077
440-639-4755
Engendered
Focusing on the works of young artists, including Christine Wuenschel, Benjamin Rodriguez, Kate Schneider, Christa Donner, Cecelia Phillips, and Casey Vogt. Through Dec. 10. Call them for the hours. Christa Donner is one of my favorite artists and she publishes Ladyfriend Zine out of Chicago where she now lives.

At the Valley Arts Center
155 Bell Street
Chagrin Falls, OH 44022
440-247-7507
Brenda Stumpf is part of a juried exhibition there. Her work rocks.

Bob Mould will be at the Grog Shop tonight with Kristin Hersh. If you don't know who Bob or Kristin are and you say you love music, you've been living a sheltered life.

Okay. Thanks for stopping by and have fun this weekend. "You stay classy", Cleveland.

FLYING CRAPPY SNOW

I fly out tomorrow for Chicago. Today looks to be as crappy as yesterday. I think I saw snow.

Wednesday, November 09, 2005

I GUESS IT COULD BE WORSE, BUT WHAT A CRAP MORNING.

This post is in red because I'm irritable. This too shall pass but WTF? I hate today. Dear 11/9/05, you've done nothing for me thus far.

First, I'm moving too slow to catch my bus this morning and walking down the street some A-HOLE in a MINIVAN drove right up to the edge of the curb and I had to move off the sidewalk or else be completely doused with crappy gutter water.

THEN, I catch the flyer bus but it miscounted my change as $2.75 instead of $3.00 (I counted out $3.50 so I could get a paper. I counted it twice.) So I had to give up my paper money in order to be able to get a stupid bus pass and transfer to the overcrowded Red Line train.

THEN, not one, not two, but THREE Blue Line rapids passed me with the "Not In Service" sign as I patiently waited until 8:30AM and finally took a Green Line rapid, which goes to Green Road.

Since the 34 bus is completely unreliable, I walked to work from the rapid station, which was a 20 minute ordeal.

THEN, I slipped on the wet floor in the building when I finally arrived and fell flat on my butt. I entered the office at 9:15.

fuck.

DOTT RECOMMENDS: HOSTEL

Because I know you know that I know you know I love horror films and I will occasionally recommend a few, I have not anticipated a horror film so much as Eli Roth's Hostel. The trailer alone freaked the living hell out of me and I am certain that it will give me nightmares for months and quite possibly shock my hair white or make it fall out.

If you are not a follower of Eli Roth's work, then you really need to check out Cabin Fever, and pay special attention to the special features. We ran right out and purchased the DVD when it became available. They guy is super inspiring and sharper than a hot razor blade.

JAPANESE TOILET

This is hilarious.

FOR SALE: FLAT FILE. ASAP!

I had purchased a 4 drawer flat file a while back thinking that I would use it for drawings. However, the sad reality is that I'm not using it nor am I planning on doing so in the future so I'm selling it for $150, which is a great price! I purchased it for more but need to get it out of my studio to permit more space.

Anyone interested can email me at dottschneider@hotmail.com. I'm in Lakewood, Ohio so take that into consideration. You will have to pick it up.

SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING DOTTS

My Chicago trip for this weekend has been booked. Keep an eye out (but not out of your socket) for me and my sister at certain art galleries. Hint *zombie*.

We booked Vegas and you have NO idea how happy I am that we are going. It looked bleak there for a moment but we pulled through. I always look forward to Vegas, the one place on this blue marble that doesn't judge us.

I, RECOMMENDUS!

Project Grizzly I had to leave the room because I could NOT stop laughing! Seriously, my eyes are puffy this morning. Anyway, this documentary is friggin' great AND it's Canadian! Basically it is this: A documentary follows a Canadian fellow working on his dream: building a suit of armor so he can observe grizzly bears from a close distance. If you are any cinefile worth his or her salt, you must see this movie. Troy Hurtubise is my new hero!

Undead Surprisingly frightening, Australian zombie flick! Loved it. There are some slow parts and some stuff where you're left going "huh?" but the effects are SWEET and I was thoroughly entertained.

Kingdom of Heaven much like the American Godzilla remake, sucked.

edited to add that the Asterix Gallery opening is THIS Friday, not last Friday.

ART OPENINGS TONIGHT

Tonight I'm heading out with my friend, Arabella Proffer to some art openings and they are:

Miller-Weitzel Gallery for Dana Depew's solo exhibition titled "The Captain & Chenille". I'll be wearing chenille in his honor, too. I can't find my favorite chenille sweater, though, which had a rolldown collar and was so pulled apart that I looked like a sheep. *sigh* I loved that thing.

We're also going to do a pass through Tremont to the Asterix Gallery for a group show where my friend, Colin Toke will be showing his work. Wild Plum Productions is taking over Asterix and you have to wear a mask! However, masks will be provided at the door. Sounds like fun to me! :)

In other news; They don't cry for you in Argentina, Bush. They cry against you!

THANK YOU, ANONYMOUS!

I wanted to post this comment because I think it's cool and I really appreciate the love. Thank you, whomever you are. I guess this means I'll keep on making. :)

Dott Dott Dott,

Thanks for conceiving Nervous Bird. I'm not sure if its through luck or pluck, but your ideas always seem be either prescient, or they simply define "the moment".

You are inspiring!

Sincerely,
A Fan Fan Fan
